'Solicitor serviced' & 'Assisted service' services

General information

  • What is the difference between quick registration and full registration?

If you start a 'Try for free' document, and wish to save it for later without purchasing it, you will need to complete a quick registration. All you will need to provide is your name, email address and your chosen password. Should you choose to purchase a product you will need to undertake a full registration which requires more details from you, e.g. your address. View our Privacy policy which explains how we use your personal information.

  • What is the difference between a 'document' and a 'document pack'?

    • A document will give you just that - one legal document or letter and an associated solicitor review depending on the service level you purchased for the document.
    • A document pack contains a number of related documents that are sold together, for example, a divorce pack, identity theft recovery pack or complaint letters pack. The pack may contain a number of instances of legal review which can be used for certain documents as detailed in the pack or product description.
  • I'd like to speak to someone about the Desktop Lawyer service before I proceed, is this possible?

Absolutely, just view our Contact us page for details of how to get in touch with us.

  • What makes Desktop Lawyer different from other online legal services?

Most online legal services provide you with 'off-the-shelf' or 'flat form' legal documents that will be relatively inflexible to your particular circumstances. Our documents ask you a series of easy-to-answer questions each with helpful explanations and often, examples. Based on your responses, our system drafts and tailors the required clauses to create a document suitable to your circumstances.

Furthermore, each document has a set of comprehensive, yet easy to understand guidance notes providing an overview of the document, things you need to consider like the jurisdiction of the document and signing and witnessing the document, together with explanations of any terms you may not understand.

All our documents and letters are created by top solicitors and barristers and are constantly reviewed and updated in accordance with changes in the law, giving you peace of mind that your document is of the highest quality and legally sound.

Finally, with all our documents you have the ability to try out the document free of charge.

  • Which documents are available?

To view a list of available documents, simply browse to the related Business law or Family law page, and select the area of law to which the document you are looking for relates. You can also view All Business documents or All Family Law documents.

If you are unable to find the document you are seeking, please contact our customer services team who will be able to advise whether the document is currently available on the site. If not, it might be a document that we are shortly planning to release to the site.

  • Can I reuse my documents?

Unfortunately you will only be able to use a purchased document once; however if you purchased a pack of documents or letters, you may be able to use certain documents more than once and this will be made clear in the document or pack description at the time of purchase.

  • How do I contact you?

Just select the Contact us link that appears in the header and footer throughout the website.

  • How can I try out your service?

With all our document creation services you have the ability to try out documents free of charge by clicking on the 'Try for free' button located next to each document or pack. Note that until you purchase a product, part of the text will be obscured, further you will not be able to print or export the document.

You can however save your document (without purchasing it) by completing a quick registration - all you will need to provide is your name, email address and a password of your choice.

  • How do I find a document?

There are several ways to search for documents and other services on the website:

    1. On the Family and Business law home pages are a list of most frequently used services
    2. Browse to the Family or Business law home pages and select the legal category in which your document might appear
    3. Search by entering a related keyword into the search box
    4. Within each law guide page there is a list of related documents and services

If you are unable to find the document you are looking for, please contact our customer services team who will be able to advise whether the document is currently available on the site. If not, it might be a document that we are shortly planning to release to the site.

  • I cannot find the document I need

If you are unable to find the document you are looking for, please contact our customer services team who will be able to advise whether the document is currently available on the site. If not, it might be a document that we are shortly planning to release to the site.

'Solicitor serviced' & 'Assisted service' services

  • Is a real lawyer used in every case?

Every document you purchase at a 'Solicitor Serviced' or 'Assisted Service' service level, and send for review, is reviewed by an appropriately qualified legal professional.

If your matter is more complex and cannot be resolved with one of our document services, simply use Find me a solicitor to send your chosen solicitor firm a question or summary of your case. They will contact you directly to discuss the matter and advise of the charges.

  • Does it matter where I live?

We will recommend a law firm to you selected by a combination of their legal specialisation and location. Even if that firm is not located particularly close to where you live, most services can easily be completed using email and telephone. All of our solicitor firms are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

  • How do I select my law firm?

The system will automatically recommend a law firm for you, based on a combination of their legal specialisation and location. You are free to choose a different law firm if you wish, but you cannot change firms once you have made your selection and they have commenced work.

  • Can I change my lawyer?

If you purchase a 'Solicitor serviced' product, you are free to choose a different law firm if you wish before you have sent a service to them to review, but you cannot change firms once you have made your selection and they have commenced work.

Further, if you selected an 'Assisted service' product, you may also upgrade to a 'Solicitor service' support level, however you will need to contact our customer services team before sending your document for review.

If you wish to make any changes to your chosen law firm, please contact our customer services team.

  • I've been told the lawyer I selected can't act for me, why is that? (Solicitor serviced products)

The most likely situation is that they have a conflict of interest. This means that the selected law firm is already representing another party in the same matter, and law firms are unable to act on behalf of both parties. Another possibility is that you have selected a different law firm from the one originally recommended, and their areas of specialisation may not match your requirements.

  • Why have I been given a different law firm for different issues? (Solicitor serviced products)

The law firm assigned to your case has been selected for a variety of reasons, including their areas of specialisation. If you have been assigned different law firms for different cases, this is most likely because their respective areas of specialisation suit your requirements best.

  • What happens if my case is more complex and requires further assistance? (Solicitor serviced products)

Your assigned lawyer will advise you if this is the case, and arrange to engage with you by telephone or face-to-face, to make sure your matter is dealt with in the most appropriate manner. They will provide you with a quote for any additional services they provide.

  • Can I contact the lawyer dealing with my legal issue? (Solicitor serviced & Assisted service products)

Some services are restricted to advice only by email; others may include telephone advice, this will be clearly explained in the product or document description before you make a purchase. If you are in any doubt as to what support and advice is applicable to any product please contact our customer services team.

  • Why should I use Desktop Lawyer instead of going directly to a law firm?

Handling your legal matter through Desktop Lawyer is more convenient and will save you money. Furthermore, the process is far more transparent, with fixed-fee prices, and is available whenever it suits you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Finally, you have the right to a money-back guarantee if the service does not satisfy your requirements.

  • It doesn't seem like my matter can be handled by a fixed-fee document service, can you still help me?

Yes. Click on 'Find me a solicitor' and tell us a bit about your case. We will then recommend a law firm to you that can help with your issue, and they will contact you to discuss the details, including how much they may charge you.

  • What happens if my document turns out to be more complicated than I envisaged?

Whilst we advertise all our services as fixed price, there is only so much lawyer time that we can provide in any one service. If you require a document that requires more bespoke drafting than we envisaged for the fixed price, you will be quoted a fixed fee or hourly rate to have the document completed to your exact requirements. Alternatively, your lawyer may advise you how far they can go to meet your requirements within the fixed price you have already paid.

  • Can I buy further legal support?

If you require a document that requires more bespoke drafting than we envisaged for the fixed price, you will be quoted a fixed fee or hourly rate to have the document completed to your exact requirements.

If you would like to buy another instance of legal review for a document you have previously sent to a solicitor firm, please contact our customer services team.
