We know that running your own business is stressful enough without having to navigate your way through myriads of ever-changing governmental rules and regulations. On 12 March a pub was ordered to pay a former employee £16,786 after he claimed that he was sacked for refusing to change the channel on the pub’s television back to an Arsenal-Liverpool game. His former employer insists this isn’t what happened at all. They claim that they didn’t sack him, but that he resigned. This may well be the case. However, the employment tribunal ruled the case to be automatically unfair because the pub didn’t handle the incident according to the government’s statutory disciplinary procedures. As this case clearly illustrates, failure to follow correct disciplinary procedures can cost your business dearly when it doesn’t need to.
